R&S SMB100B analog RF signal generator and R&S SMBV100B vector signal generator from Rohde & Schwarz.

Evolution of R&S SMB100B analog RF signal and R&S SMBV100B vector signal generators from Rohde & Schwarz

  • Rohde & Schwarz introduces two new compact mid-range signal generators: the R&S SMB100B analog RF signal generator and the R&S SMBV100B vector signal generator.
  • The two new benchtop signal generator models, covering a frequency range up to 6 GHz, improve the specifications of the previous generation R&S SMB100A (analogue model) and R&S SMBV100A (vector model) instruments.

The R&S SMB100B analogue RF signal generator and the R&S SMBV100B vector signal generator with touch screen are integrated into a ¾ 19″ form factor.

The new signal generators are available in different configurations. With frequency ranges from 8 kHz to 1 GHz, 3 GHz and 6 GHz, they can be adapted to various applications. Three different RF output power levels are available to suit the specific needs of the application. The generators can provide up to +34 dBm of output power (at 1 GHz carrier frequency) without an external amplifier.

The R&S SMBV100B, with a base bandwidth up to 500 MHz, is suitable for vector modulated signal generation. Various options are available for major digital communications standards (5G, cellular IoT, LTE, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/g/n/ac/ax WLAN and Bluetooth 5.0). The signals specific to the specifications of these standards can thus be generated by the instrument without requiring an external PC. The signal parameters can therefore be changed quickly.

The R&S SMBV100B offers envelope tracking and digital predistortion (DPD). Signals up to 2 GHz bandwidth can be modulated via external I/Q inputs. Internally generated 160 MHz IEEE 802.11ac WLAN signals have a measured EVM of -49 dB. Broadband signals benefit from the generator’s I/Q modulation frequency response of 0.1 dB (measured) over the entire 500 MHz bandwidth.

These signal generators are scalable. Some functions can be added after the purchase of the instrument via software keycodes. These include modulation standards, output power level and, for the R&S SMBV100B vector model, RF frequency range and modulation bandwidth. The instrument does not have to be sent to the Rohde & Schwarz service center to be upgradded.
