LoRa : low cost, long battery life, and wide range wireless technology for IoT applications

IoT : what is LoRa technology?

  • The LoRa technology was born following the acquisition in 2012 of the French startup Cycléo by Semtech.
  • The LoRa Alliance Consortium is responsible for promoting this radio communication technology.
  • The LoRa Alliance consortium includes among its founders Actility, Cisco, Eolane, IBM, Kerlink, IMST, MultiTech, Sagemcom, Semtech and Microchip Technology, as well as telecom operators: Bouygues Telecom, KPN, SingTel, Proximus, Swisscom and FastNet.
  • LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) modulation technology is designed to provide wireless connection of sensors, equipments or devices for IoT (Internet of Things) or IIoT (Internet Industrial of Things) applications.
  • LoRa technology offers a high level and low cost of integration (compact), and promises a long battery life (up to 20 years), and a range of 5 km in urban areas and 50 km outdoors.
