R&S CMW500 radio communication tester from Rohde & Schwarz.

Rohde & Schwarz and Skylo validate NB-NTN device test cases

  • Rohde & Schwarz and Skylo Technologies have verified and validated, using the CMW500 broadband radio communication tester, all the test cases defined in the acceptance criteria of Skylo, operator of non-terrestrial networks (NTN), including the newly added test cases for SMS on NB-NTN.
  • This paves the way for the certification of devices operating in Narrowband-IoT over non-terrestrial networks (NB-NTN).

Skylo is a global provider of non-terrestrial network (NTN) services, whose network leverages dedicated satellite spectrum across various partner constellations. This enables cellular devices such as smartphones and IoTs to connect directly to existing satellites.

This technology aims to facilitate communication, even in remote areas lacking traditional network coverage. Skylo’s certification process involves specific tests and assessments to ensure that devices meet the required performance and reliability standards.

The validation of SMS services on NB-NTN represents a further step in making satellite connectivity available to consumer devices.

Smartphone and handheld device users can now count on messaging services regardless of their location. This will improve their communication capabilities in areas without access to the terrestrial network.
