Micro-transcoder from Jackson Labs Technologies

Viavi acquires Jackson Labs Technologies

  • Viavi Solutions has announced the completion of the acquisition of Jackson Labs Technologies, a specialist in Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) solutions for critical infrastructure for military and civilian applications. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Jackson Labs Technologies is a privately held company located in Las Vegas. It designs and manufactures components, RF modules, and time and frequency measurement instruments, among other things.

The company provides modules, subsystems and packaged solutions such as front-end receivers, transcoders, rack-mounted equipment and patented retrofit technologies. Its solutions serve the military, defense industries, power distribution infrastructure, low earth orbit (LEO) satellite operators and 5G service providers.

“Becoming part of Viavi will significantly expand our market reach worldwide, and allow us to provide more high-level PNT solutions,” said Said Jackson, CEO of Jackson Labs Technologies.

According to Viavi, Jackson Labs’ M-Code solutions complement its timing and synchronization solutions offering as positioning, navigation and synchronization requirements grow and become increasingly critical in the defense, space, commercial aviation, transportation and telecommunication network sectors.

M-Code is a military signal used in the GPS L1 (1575.42 MHz) and L2 (1227.60 MHz) bands. It is designed to improve the security and anti-jamming properties of military navigation using GPS. Jackson Labs Technologies offers, for example, the RSR GNSS transcoder, which can be used to adapt any existing GPS equipment to the next generation of GNSS, SAASM, M-Code, INS and other PVT/PNT sources. It can also be used as a small general purpose GPS simulator for testing, manufacturing, qualification, spoofing and jamming simulation. Built into a compact package (1.6 x 2.3 inches ~ 4 cm x 5.84 cm ), it does not require an external computer and consumes less than 1.1 W.

Viavi Solutions was formed in August 2015 when JDSU (JDS Uniphase) split into Viavi Solutions and Lumentum Holdings. The U.S.-based company, headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, specializes in communication network test, measurement and assurance monitoring solutions.
