Rohde & Schwarz and Qualcomm Validate First 5G NR SSSG Power-Saving Conformance Test

  • Rohde & Schwarz and Qualcomm Technologies have validated the first 3GPP conformance test case for the Search Space Set Group Switching (SSSG) feature.
  • Introduced in the 3GPP Release 17 specification, this technology aims to reduce the power consumption of 5G NR mobile devices.

The SSSG mechanism alters how User Equipment (UE) monitors the Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH). By dynamically adjusting the channel monitoring frequency based on network activity, the system limits unnecessary active monitoring cycles while maintaining the reception of resource allocation instructions.

Validation of test case TS 38.523-1 TC 7.1.1.12.5 was performed using an R&S TS-PCT series protocol test platform—based on the Rohde & Schwarz CMX500 family signaling tester (pictured)—connected to a test device equipped with a Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF.

Submission to 3GPP RAN5

The joint verification work led to the formal submission of results to the 3GPP RAN5 working group, which is responsible for conformance testing specifications.

Observations gathered during testing on the hardware platform also led to the submission of a Change Request aimed at adjusting the test standard text for the entire mobile chip and terminal certification ecosystem.
