Rohde & Schwarz Adds Three-Phase Power Analysis Capabilities to its MXO Series Oscilloscopes

Evaluating variable frequency drives, inverters, and three-phase AC power systems typically requires combining digital readings from a power analyzer with waveform capture on an oscilloscope. The R&S MXO-K333 option integrates these two functions into a single instrument, enabling the correlation of electrical measurements with switching, control signals, and transient events.

Channel Configuration and Calculated Values

A configuration wizard guides the user through channel assignment and verification of the voltage and current probe wiring. The application supports common two-, three-, and four-wire configurations (2V2A, 3V3A, and 3VN3A).

Once the connection is validated, the software performs a cycle-by-cycle calculation to determine the following values:

  • The RMS values โ€‹โ€‹of the voltages and currents.
  • The power factor, active power, reactive power, and total power.
  • The overall efficiency of the three-phase system, calculated by defining the input and output parameters.

 

System Analysis and Integration Tools

The application also integrates vector diagram (Fresnel) representation, harmonic analysis, and total harmonic distortion (THD) measurement in accordance with the requirements of IEC 61000-3-2 and MIL-STD-1399 standards.

During measurement operations, the waveforms remain continuously displayed on the oscilloscope screen. Users retain access to the device’s mathematical functions, FFT spectral analysis, zone triggering, and communication bus decoding, thus facilitating the identification of the causes of malfunctions on a single hardware platform.
