- Emerson has announced new radio frequency (RF) test capabilities designed for characterizing devices with multiple RF channels and automating measurements.
- The offering centers on the new four-port vector network analyzer (VNA) from the NI PXIe-5633 series and software enhancements for the vector signal transceiver (VST) from the NI PXIe-5860 series.
- Both modules integrate with the NI PXI platform to support applications such as multiport S-parameter measurements and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) configurations.
The NI PXIe-5633 module expands NI’s vector network analysis capabilities to four ports. This configuration enables the characterization of multi-channel RF devices and the measurement of interactions between different ports.
S-parameter measurements can thus be performed in architectures featuring multiple RF paths. This approach addresses needs associated with wireless systems utilizing multiple radio chains, distributed architectures, or configurations involving multiple antennas.
Emerson pairs the four-port vector network analyzer with software enhancements for the NI PXIe-5860 module, specifically targeting synchronization functions. This allows the vector signal transceiver (VST) to be used in MIMO and multi-channel measurement workflows that require time synchronization between signals.
Combined Measurements in a PXI Architecture
Another development enables S-parameter measurements to be performed alongside modulated RF measurements using a single RF connection. Both types of measurements can thus be consolidated within a software-defined PXI architecture.
This integration aims to reduce the need for separate test setups for network analysis and modulated RF measurements. It also enables the consolidation of various stages—from device validation to production testing—within a single automation environment.
This approach is particularly well-suited for RF systems requiring the simultaneous characterization of multiple channels. It allows the test configuration to scale according to the number of channels and specific measurement requirements, while maintaining a unified architecture.
4×4 MIMO demonstration at European Microwave Week
Emerson is showcasing these new capabilities at European Microwave Week with a 4×4 MIMO demonstration featuring the NI PXIe-5860 module combined with a four-port vector network analyzer.
Target applications include semiconductor validation, wireless communications research, and aerospace and defense systems. More broadly, the solution addresses RF equipment based on multi-channel, multi-antenna, or software-defined architectures.
