Global deployment of 5G networks accelerated in 2020

  • According to the fifth edition of “The State of 5G” study conducted by Viavi Solutions, 1,336 cities are now equipped with a 5G telecommunications network worldwide. This corresponds to a 350% increase in one year.
  • By January 2021, more than 30% of the world’s countries had deployed a 5G network.

5G communications networks have been deployed in 61 countries around the world, representing an 80% increase since January 2020.

The top three countries with the most cities equipped with 5G networks are China (341), the United States (279) and South Korea (85). The United Kingdom now has 54 cities equipped with 5G networks, closely followed by Spain with 53 cities.

Last year, 27 other countries launched the rollout of 5G networks. Three of them are already in the top ten in terms of the number of cities covered: Canada with 49 cities, and France and Thailand with 24 cities covered.

Asia has 528 cities equipped, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) 459 cities, and the Americas 349 cities. In China, the number of cities with 5G was multiplied sixfold in one year, while coverage in the United States increased fivefold.
