Rohde & Schwarz MXO AI Connect

Rohde & Schwarz offers a solution for controlling its MXO oscilloscopes using natural language, powered by AI

  • Rohde & Schwarz has introduced MXO AI Connect, software that enables its MXO 3, MXO 4, MXO 5, and MXO 5C series oscilloscopes to interface with artificial intelligence assistants.
  • The goal is to allow engineers to control specific instrument functions using natural language, while providing the AI assistants with access to technical information specific to the equipment.

The software functions as a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, installed locally on the user’s PC or on a shared workstation in a laboratory. It acts as a bridge between the engineer’s chosen AI assistant and the oscilloscope, leveraging Rohde & Schwarz’s technical documentation and resources to interpret requests and translate them into commands tailored to the instrument.

MXO AI Connect is compatible with various AI clients, including Cursor, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot. This gives users the flexibility to choose their preferred assistant, language model, and data processing policy. Communication with the oscilloscope takes place via standard VISA interfaces, such as HiSLIP, VXI-11, or TCP/IP. All interactions with the instrument remain within the local environment. No additional software installation is required on the oscilloscope itself, and the device remains fully operable via its front-panel controls even while an AI assistant is connected.

Configuration, analysis, and measurement automation

MXO AI Connect supports several aspects of working with an oscilloscope. The AI assistant can utilize the instrument’s technical documentation to answer questions regarding its functions or operation. Furthermore, a request made in natural language can be translated into specific settings and commands, allowing the user to configure the device without having to manually search for the corresponding functions in documentation or programming examples.

AI models can also assist in analyzing results—for instance, by examining waveforms, identifying specific features, or investigating relationships within measured data. For more complex test sequences, AI agents can coordinate instrument control, data processing, and programming tasks, while iteratively adjusting configurations and code.

The software also supports R&S ScopeStudio and is available for compatible oscilloscopes in the MXO series. Rohde & Schwarz will showcase this at the Electronica trade fair, held in Munich from November 10 to 13, 2026.
