Keysight Radar Scene Emulator

Keysight offers scene emulation solution for automotive radar testing

  • Keysight Technologies announces the launch of Radar Scene Emulator, an automotive radar emulation solution.
  • The solution will enable automotive manufacturers to virtually reproduce real-world driving scenarios in the laboratory to test the performance of radar and processing algorithms for autonomous vehicles.

In cars equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), the decision units must process large amounts of data from an increasing number of sensors. This makes development, simulation and testing more complex.

Autonomous vehicles carry more sensing systems, cameras and radars. This increases the amount of data to be processed by advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and requires the development of robust data processing algorithms to ensure safe and autonomous vehicle operation.

The emulation of road traffic scenes in the laboratory allows to perform a multitude of tests in a wide variety of driving situations and environments while limiting the need for on-road testing.

Keysight’s Radar Scene Emulator solution enables the reproduction of real-world driving scenes in the laboratory, taking into account variations in environmental conditions, traffic density, speed, distance and number of targets. This allows complex scenes that are difficult or impossible to test in a real environment to be reproduced in the laboratory in a repeatable manner.

This emulation solution uses a miniature RF front-end with its own antenna. Eight of these RF front ends are integrated on a single circuit board. Sixty-four boards were then arranged in a semicircle to form an emulation display.

This solution combines hundreds of miniature radar target simulators into a scalable display that can emulate 512 stationary or moving radar objects and at distances as close as 1.5 meters in a contiguous ±70-degree horizontal and ±15-degree vertical field of view.

It supports short-, medium-, and long-range millimeter-wave radars by generating static and dynamic targets at distances of 1.5 meters to 300 meters and speeds of 0 to 400 km/h.

This ability to emulate both near and far targets in a wide, continuous field of view makes it possible to detect and differentiate between multiple objects in dense, complex scenes.

The Radar Scene Emulator solution is part of the Autonomous Drive Emulation (ADE) platform that Keysight has developed in collaboration with IPG Automotive and Nordsys. The ADE platform enables emulation of synchronized connections to all relevant vehicle sensors.
