Exeger's Powerfoyle solar cells

Semtech and Exeger Deliver Solar Energy Collection Solution for IoT Sensors

  • Semtech Corporation, a global provider of analog semiconductors and related algorithms, announces its collaboration with Exeger, a Swedish manufacturer of customizable solar cells.
  • The combination of Semtech’s LoRa Edge™ asset management platform and Exeger’s Powerfoyle solar cell technology aims to significantly extend the battery life of asset tracking and environmental sensing devices.

Semtech’s LoRa Edge platform scans signals from GNSS satellites and Wi-Fi hotspots, then distributes processing between the IoT devices and LoRa Cloud™ to determine their location. The Cloud-based resolver aims to reduce power consumption, thereby increasing battery life. Exeger’s Powerfoyle solar cells can be integrated into any electronic device. They convert any light into energy to charge and power electronic devices with clean, inexhaustible energy.

“With the combined benefits of Powerfoyle and the ultra-low power consumption of LoRa® Semtech devices, IoT applications enjoy extended or even unlimited battery life,” said Dr. Oscar Hemberg, Head of Product Integration at Exeger, “Together, we are taking another step toward energy independence by offering more sustainable products powered by clean, inexhaustible energy.”

The patented Powerfoyle material integrates into IoT sensors through Semtech’s chip-to-Cloud solution, LoRa Edge, with the goal of creating a new standard for green IoT industry platforms.

The combination of these two technologies is expected to result in new tracking applications, powered by solar energy and providing geolocation, including indoor and outdoor asset tracking, international supply chain logistics, agriculture, smart utilities, and smart cities.

“LoRa devices are paving the way for smart IoT applications that help solve some of the biggest challenges facing our planet,” said Marc Pegulu, Vice President and General Manager of Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “The collaboration between Semtech and Exeger will enable manufacturers to develop IoT devices leveraging this new energy harvesting technology for a smarter, more sustainable future.”

New IoT asset trackers will be showcased at EdgeTech+ 2022, to be held November 16-18, 2022 in Yokohama, Japan, in the LoRa pavilion.
