Semtech completes acquisition of Sierra Wireless

  • Semtech announced the completion of the acquisition of Canadian company Sierra Wireless in an all-cash transaction with a total value of approximately US$1.2 billion.

 
The transaction will nearly double Semtech’s annual revenue (approximately $741 million in 2022) and adds approximately $100 million in recurring revenue in the IoT cloud services space.

Semtech expects the acquisition to generate US$40 million in operational synergies within 12 to 18 months of closing.

Founded in 1960, the American company Semtech is a supplier of semiconductors, IoT systems and cloud connectivity services. It offers wireless communication chipsets using the LoRa protocol to connect sensors to the Cloud. LoRa technology was born following Semtech’s 2012 acquisition of French startup Cycléo. It aims to provide wireless connection (over a range of several kilometers and with low energy consumption), of sensors or devices in the context of IoT applications.

With Sierra Wireless’ solutions, Semtech strengthens its expertise in cellular broadband connectivity, ultra-low power LoRa connectivity, software and IoT services.
